AM, A1, A2, A: motorcycle licences explained

Royal Motoring School · 8 July 2026

Malta's motorcycle ladder: AM covers 50cc from age 16-plus (€250 all-inclusive at Royal, two sessions plus permit). A1 is 125cc at 18+, A2 is up to 300cc at 21+, and full A (600cc and beyond) needs age 24+ or two years on A2 — each €225 including doctor, permit, insurance and TM fee.

Lessons run €25/hr and the final test is €100. There's also Category 111: ten hours of lessons for Cat B holders. One rule many miss: an EU Cat B licence lets you ride up to 125cc in Malta with no theory and no final test.
