What is the process to get a Malta driving licence?+
Check you are eligible → apply for the learner's permit → start lessons → your instructor applies for your final test when you're ready.
How much will it cost?+
The Royal Online Learner Permit Process is €100 (VAT incl.) — the permit fully processed and valid 3 years, Royal acceptance, app access and step-by-step guidance. Two fees are paid separately during the process: the medical examination €20 direct to the doctor, and €23.25 direct to Transport Malta. Then: theory test €30.25, lessons from €20/hr (€25/hr after 5pm and on Saturdays), final test €90 — the Transport Malta test fee (€23.25 weekday, €40 Saturday) is paid directly to Transport Malta. Most beginners take 6–8 months from zero to licence.
What if I already have a learner's permit?+
Register on the Royal System and upload your permit during registration — that assigns you to Royal correctly and keeps your details current. If you are transferring from another motoring school, the change of school fee is €60 (VAT incl.).
I am an asylum seeker — can I apply?+
Please contact the school directly. Documentation requirements differ from the standard resident route, so we will go through your specific situation with you before you pay anything. WhatsApp +356 7777 7777.
My application was rejected — what now?+
Do not panic; it is usually a small correction. Almost every rejection is caused by the selfie or the signature photo not matching the required format. Log in at licenzji-xufiera.gov.mt with your ID card number and application code, and open the TASK LIST — Transport Malta states the reason and what is needed. A Transport Malta correction form carries a €20 administration fee.
Which documents do I need for the learner's permit?+
Maltese citizens: ID card (18+). Foreign residents: Maltese residence permit + Maltese ID number, held for at least 6 months.
How do I apply for the learner's permit?+
Everything is online. Start the guided process here — it takes you through documents, the Transport Malta application, payment, the medical and your permit, one step at a time. Or message us on WhatsApp +356 7777 7777.
How long until I receive the learner's permit?+
Usually 1 to 3 days.
Didn't receive your Transport Malta code?+
Foreign applicants: email dls.tm@transport.gov.mt with your inquiry. Or visit Identità in Msida to update your ID document details.
No option to choose an instructor when applying?+
Choose another school in the form, then select Royal again — the instructor option will appear. Your actual instructor is assigned later by location and schedule.
How many lessons should I take?+
Beginners: two lessons per week for at least eight weeks, then one per week is usually enough. Experienced drivers: minimum 10 hours — unlearning old habits is the hardest part.
Can I switch between manual and automatic during the course?+
Yes — whenever you like, it's your choice.
Can I change to another Royal instructor?+
Yes. If your instructor can't accommodate your schedule, call 7777 7777 and we'll assign you another Royal instructor — no questions asked, no extra fees.
Will anyone else be in the car during lessons?+
No — it's just you and your instructor.
